When Louis Vitton was only 14 years old, he moved to Paris on foot which was 400 km away from his hometown. It was during this journey that he picked up odd jobs to pay for the journey. He took up as a trainee layetier (clothes packer) during his voyage. He had managed to earn a name for himself and was appointed by Napolean lll of France as his wife’s layetier. It was through his experience with the French aristocracy that he developed an expert knowledge of what made a good traveling case. It was this learning experience which made him start designing luggage, thereby setting the foundation of the Louis Vuitton Company.

He founded the company in the year 1854. Before he emerged in the market as a producer of luggage, the designs which were popular were round top designs. His introduction of flat-bottom trunks with Trianon Canvas which were light in weight and artistic to look at became a rage in the market. Soon the other manufacturers started adopting the style and the design of the product. It was in the year 1867 that company paid participation to the universal exhibition in Paris. As a move against the copy of his look, he changed the Trianon design to the beige and brown stripes design in 1876. In 1888 he further changed it to Damier Canvas and added to his design the company trademark. The company has been one of the major manufacturers of luxury leather products since its inception.
